Upper eyelid lift by the expert Prof. Dr. Shafighi - Bern
The eye area represents the most important area in our appearance on our face. The eye area is used to assess whether we are well rested, sad, fresh or exhausted.
Perhaps you suffer from permanent drooping eyelids, or you may look tired all the time because of your droopy upper eyelids and feel impaired by it. This is an increasing problem with age. Basically, an eyelid lift can be recommended to almost everyone over 30 years of age . During an upper eyelid lift with Prof. Dr. Shafighi in Bern, the excess skin is removed and her eyes are cleared again.
The upper eyelid lift is a short 1 hour procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia. This is a good treatment option for drooping eyelids. Hardly any operation brings such a clear before-and-after effect as the upper eyelid tightening. The elasticity of the skin decreases almost proportionally, especially with increasing age. What happens is that it pushes fat and skin tissue forward. This leads to increased bags under the eyes in the lower eyelid area. Then a lower eyelid lift can be carried out, which is similar to an upper eyelid lift.
How the skin on the face develops with age, as far as the drooping eyelids are concerned, largely depends on genetics, i.e. the family disposition. However, there are additional factors that you can even influence in some cases yourself. Try not to overdo the facial expressions so as not to encourage permanent dynamic wrinkles. Make sure you protect yourself well from the sun. Exposing the skin to UV light causes it to age faster (facial rejuvenation with CO2 laser or hyaluronic acid, possibly botox).
Wrinkle treatment can be combined with an upper eyelid lift. Unfortunately, the eyes are very important, and because of the central position, drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes are very difficult to hide. Once noticed, they are usually permanently annoying. The drooping eyelids can even restrict your vision or interfere with reading. The excess skin, sagging from the aging process, causes the drooping eyelids to appear. These no longer regress independently.
Creams do not help against drooping eyelids either. Usually there are also wrinkles around the eyes and annoying bags under the eyes. All in all, the appearance can be severely disrupted. Make-up or clothing are not possible for covering. Drooping eyelids at the top of the eyes correspond to bags under the eyes. Both make a sad or tired expression that we may not even feel like. The effect of the upper eyelid tightening is a smoothing (tightening), whereby your gaze is open again and the eyes appear more alert and radiant.
Procedure for an upper eyelid lift
The operation upper eyelid is used to correct the upper eyelid, is performed under local anesthesia and is usually performed on both sides at the same time. The technique is done very carefully. With a delicate touch, Mr. Shafighi removes a narrow strip of skin, which, however, has to be wide enough for the desired effect. Part of the underlying (eye-ring) muscle tissue and some of the herniated fatty tissue are usually also removed if there is an excess.
If your eyebrows are also rather low, it is a good option to correct them immediately and raise them a little. In which cases the combination with an eyebrow lift is worthwhile and with which method (e.g. Botox) is examined by Prof. Shafighi. The upper eyelid must be lifted exactly in the crease of the eyelid, otherwise the surgical scar, albeit very thin, may later be visible. If the procedure is successful, the delicate scar is so well hidden that it can only be seen very slightly and is hardly noticeable.
Of course, here in Bern and Zurich, we make sure that you do not attract attention after the upper eyelid lift, even immediately after the procedure. Immediately after the operation, we will put on fine, skin-colored plasters (Steristrips or similar). If they get wet, you can blow dry them without any problems. These fine plasters protect the fresh seam, but they also contribute significantly to the stabilization of the recently operated eyelid. You should leave the narrow, inconspicuous plasters for stabilization for 1-2 weeks, according to Prof. Shafighi's instructions.
How much your eyelids (usually present as drooping eyelids) can be corrected with the upper eyelid lift depends very much on the individual initial condition of the eyelids. So that you can get an idea of this, Prof. Shafighi will give you good advice before the operation. You should develop an awareness of the possibilities and limits of an upper eyelid lift before you have had the procedure carried out. This is how we create an optimal basis for a successful operation. For Prof. Shafighi, quality and trust in his ability are top priorities, which is why he takes a lot of time for you even during the consultation.
Combination of drooping eyelids and lower eyelid lifts
Correction of the upper and lower eyelids (upper and lower eyelid tightening, correcting drooping eyelids and removing bags under the eyes) can be combined. This means that in just one operation, both the left and the right eyes can be tightened above and below. Although the procedure can in principle be carried out under local anesthesia, "sedation" is also possible here in Bern and Zurich. This allows you to have the procedure carried out in twilight sleep. We recommend this in some cases, sometimes with a combination of an upper and lower eyelid lift.
What is the advantage of a combination of the upper and lower eyelid lift? The combined procedure means a somewhat longer operation time, but the preparation phase, as well as the healing and follow-up treatment, only need to be carried out once. You will only have the possible side effects once. This includes the internal tension and possibly slight nervousness that most people experience before an operation.
But sometimes there is small swelling and slight pain after the upper eyelid lift after the surgery, albeit a minor one. If you have a bruise (hematoma), which can happen, you can usually put make-up on it. But you shouldn't put it in the sun to avoid the risk of hyperpigmentation (brown spots).
What does the aftercare look like after the procedure?
Since the upper eyelid lift is a minor operation in plastic surgery, it can be done on an outpatient basis. This is also provided in the case of a combined tightening of the upper and lower eyelids. Only a short break is recommended immediately after the procedure. If you feel fine then we can send you home. We make sure that you are equipped with pain relievers in case of mild post-operative pain.
Please inform us of any allergies or intolerances at this point in time. Regular cooling helps, especially after the operation, but also in the days immediately after, this has a pain-relieving effect and reduces any swelling. Before the procedure, equip yourself with cold packs that you keep in the freezer, but never put on with direct skin contact. You may need two to three soft (conformable) cooling elements.
The migraine masks with gel filling are also good to use. Use the coolant even if there is no swelling at the moment to prevent it. We recommend sleeping with your upper body slightly elevated for the next few days. This will result in less blood pooling and less swelling. You can shower again after 12 hours unless we inform you otherwise. Please avoid rubbing in the eye area.
The operation area remains a restricted area for the first week after the operation; do not use creams or ointments. This changes after the suture has been removed; light make-up is allowed 2 days after the suture has been removed. At the check-up appointment, inform Prof. Shafighi what you plan to use in the operated area. As with the preparatory meeting, good communication is also important during aftercare. Reading and watching TV should be possible after just two days, but you have to test it individually.
It is important not to overexert your eyes. You can also use your contact lenses again as soon as you no longer find the feeling uncomfortable. When inserting, however, be careful not to bring too much movement into the operated area so that the fresh suture is as free of tension as possible. Prof. Shafighi usually plans the check-up appointment with you after a week to remove the thread.
A careful wound and suture check is carried out. When the threads are ready, they are pulled. For this, the fine plasters are first removed. If the healing process is normal, the suture has healed well by this point and any dark discoloration or slight swelling has also disappeared.
Do the health insurance companies bear the costs of an upper eyelid lift?
The indication makes the difference. Indication means the reason why a certain operation is performed. This is checked and assessed by Prof. Shafighi. Costs can be covered if there is a medical need, such as a significant restriction in the field of vision.
If there is a chance that the health insurance company will cover the costs, a cost credit application will be made. If the answer is positive, the operation can be paid for by the health insurance company. Many eyelid lifts are also carried out as a self-pay service.
